Open Source Cinema is a virtual space where you can upload your own videos, or remix other user’s content to create something entirely new. You can use media from your own archives, or snatch a YouTube vid and start creating your masterpiece.
If you feel you have no ideas of your own, there is a ‘projects’ page, where current filmmakers create tasks for others to do for them. This is a great opportunity to show off your editing skills.
There is an archive of footage (which has a license under Creative Commons) which you can use and remix including popular music, slideshows and videos to get you started. YouTube even has a channel dedicated to Open Source Cinema.
Open Source Cinema is a collaborative project which was started in order to create the documentary film RiP!: A Remix Manifesto. It started in 2004 and has had much input from users around the world; however, the six-year documentary will be finished this year.
Much of the content is based on Canada , because the creator Brett Gaylor is from Montreal , but that shouldn’t stop you from contributing.
Projects currently in progress include:
- RiP!: A Remix Manifesto 2.0
- Pre-empting Dissent – Open Source Secrecy
- Turcot; and
- Homless Nation 2010
Check it out and see what you can do!
